Raine Maida is the founding member and lead singer of the multi-platinum rock band, Our Lady Peace, and considered one of the best songwriters in music today. As a socially conscious global citizen, he is also known for his advocacy work with War Child, an organization that provides humanitarian assistance to war-affected children in countries around the world. Maida has traveled with the organization to film documentaries in Darfur, Iraq, and Ethiopia. He also has ties to the Montreal based Apathy is Boring, The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and the LadyBug foundation.
In 1998, Our Lady Peace founded the Summersault festival that toured across Canada in 1998 and 2000, with lineups that included Crystal Method, Garbage, Deftones, Foo Fighters, A Perfect Circle, The Smashing Pumpkins and the underground theatrical performers "Circus Diablo". The rock fest influenced and changed the national touring circuit of Canada for years after, bringing international acts to cities that were not traditional stops for major artists at that time. The Summersault Festival was based on UK Festivaltouring ethics of offering a variety of music genres in a festival setting.
In addition to his success as a front man, Maida has written and produced songs for some of the biggest names in modern show business, including collaborating on three songs with American Idol winner David Cook on his self-titled album. Maida also shares songwriting credits with his wife, Juno Award-winning artist Chantal Kreviazuk. The talented duo contributed to three songs for American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson: Where is Your Heart?, the international hit "Walk Away", and One Minute. Most recently, they co-wrote the song, Permanent, for Cook. Other artists they have worked with include Martha Wainwright,Carrie Underwood,The Veronicas, Pink, Cheyenne Kimball, Katie Melua and Ron Sexsmith.
Maida also released his first solo album, The Hunters Lullaby, in 2007, and has written with and developed numerous indie bands, including, Men women and Children,Die Mannequin. Green River Ordinance, Electric Touch ,Sleepway, and Billy the Kid.
Raine, with his wife Chantal Kreviazuk, are the recipients of the 2009 Tiffany Mark Award. The Tiffany Mark Award, named after the company's famed Mark watch, honours Canadian men and women who are making their "mark" both professionally and in their community through tireless efforts on behalf of charities and organizations they care about deeply.
This year, Raine and Chantal receive the Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award in recognition of their longstanding commitment to charitable initiatives. The award - bestowed to an individual having demonstrated the highest ideals and qualities of humanitarian service and in doing so, has reflected those ideals of courage and compassion - will be presented at the Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Awards gala on Thursday, March 22, 2012, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, as part of Canadian Music Week's 30th anniversary celebrations.
